1060 - An extremely rare Lowestoft Junket dish c 1765
Dishes of this size (diameter 25 cms) are very rare in Lowestoft porcelain. For example, the printed catalogue of the Norwich Museum collection does not include any fluted dish of this size. Few dishes are illustrated, most of a 1760s date. It appears that there were firing difficulties with large dishes and they may subsequently have been discontinued for this reason. Painted in under-glaze blue with flower sprays, insects, and a butterfly.
Perhaps because of the strains incurred during firing, the dish has not survived intact as it has been in two. The front and the outside of the rear has been restored leaving the original staple repair showing on the base.
A great rarity!
